Abstract

This research aimed to determine prevalence of depression and allied factors among the students from public and private universities in Karachi, Pakistan. A cross sectional study was designed comprised of 312 students (age; 18-25 years) studying in different private and government institutes of selected city. Data was collected using Goldberg Depression Questionnaire. Chi square test was applied to analyze data at 0.05 level of significance. Result showed the high depression level among students with median age of 22 years. The significant factors of depression found included age, type of institute, social circle, economic status and environment at home. It was noticed that all the individuals are suffering from depression due to varying factors. Students at university level are required to have regular assessment of their stress level and relevant help from their parents, teachers and healthcare professionals.
